Five international digital nomads, content creators, and remote workers will stay in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro this month, exploring the potential of rural and lesser-known destinations. Their arrival is part of the STAR Rural Residency program, which connects the tourism and development potential of two neighboring countries through cross-border cooperation and European Union support.

As part of the program, a meetup titled “Beyond Borders: Digital Nomads Stories” will be held on September 24, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Code Hub Mostar, where international participants will share their experiences living and working remotely, as well as discuss what modern digital nomads look for in a destination.

The event is intended for tourism professionals, accommodation providers, institutional representatives, freelancers, and remote workers. Participants will gain concrete insights into what digital nomads consider key prerequisites for living and working: from infrastructure and working conditions to the quality of local offerings and the most common mistakes destinations make when developing products for this target group.

STAR Rural Residency Program

The program is part of the STAR project, implemented under the IPA III CBC Bosnia and Herzegovina – Montenegro 2021–2027 program, with financial support from the European Union. The goal of the project is to develop new tourism content through joint activities of partners from both countries, promote rural areas, and increase the visibility of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro in the international tourism market.

Digital nomads represent an increasingly important target group in tourism—people who travel not just for a few days, but seek destinations where they can stay longer, work, and engage with the local community.

Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro have significant potential for this form of tourism: from natural beauty and mountainous regions to rich culture, an authentic lifestyle, and opportunities for outdoor activities.

Connecting these potentials through cross-border cooperation is precisely one of the values of the STAR project. By exchanging experiences and through joint promotion, the two countries can position themselves as an attractive region for slow travel, remote work, and longer stays for international guests.
